When a Writer's Vacation is Over

So, you took a few days' annual leave for the sake of your sanity. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

You might've slipped into a delicious pattern of sleeping late, and having mid-morning coffee at the kitchen table with your manuscript. Or maybe you explored a different part of the world for a couple of weeks, and came home bursting with new ideas and experiences. It doesn't matter what you do during annual leave; spending time away from the Day Job Monster is an unbelievable luxury, isn't it?

But when the glorious days of freedom draw to an end, you're facing a nasty little reality check. Because now you have to go back to work. The drums of impending doom are deafening.

Don't panic! There are ways to deal with the hateful experience of stepping from your real life back into the fluorescent office world. Here are six of the best.

1. Devote yourself to relaxation.

The night before you have to get back into the Monster race, go see the funniest movie in town. Spend the evening laughing and relaxing, rather than brooding and pacing. Have a glass of wine, or two. (But preferably not seven.) Deliberately create a state of mind that makes you feel good, and strong enough to face the inevitable despair of the next morning.

2. Sleep properly.

If you sleep badly the night before your first day back with the Day Job Monster, you pretty much guarantee the day will be worse than it has to be. If you're prone to worry-related insomnia, take some steps to make sure you don't lie awake all night.

Head off for a long walk in the early evening so that you're physically tired, take a long relaxing bath, or enter the escapist world of a gripping novel. There are a range of natural sleeping aids on the market as well; ask at your local pharmacy about effective herbal supplements.

3. Be unusually kind to yourself.

The first morning back at work will be tough. It's not the time to withdraw cold-turkey from coffee, or start a radical new starvation diet. Accept you might need some treats to even make it out your front door.

Freshly ground coffee, your favorite shirt, a warmed chocolate croissant, breakfast TV, what will it take? A morning like this qualifies as an emergency! It's not the moment to worry about pastry-related calories, or junk TV. You're creating a miracle by getting to work. Use whatever resources you need to make it happen.

4. Play some breakfast music.

What kind of music do you find most therapeutic? What lifts you up and makes you smile? Listen to your favorite CD - loudly - before you leave the house. Use the power of music to consciously alter your frame of mind for the better.

5. Celebrate not quitting before lunch.

When you've staggered through the morning and arrived at the halfway point of your first day back, it's time to celebrate. It's a monumental achievement, and by now you probably feel like you've climbed a mountain.

Reward yourself over lunch. Get out of the office, and find a truly superb gourmet sandwich, indulge in a little retail therapy, or catch up with a friend. Do not run errands. Not under any circumstances. Not today. Stand in line in the grocery store or post office tomorrow.

6. Affirm your priorities.

After lunch, you have the afternoon to get through. Remind yourself why you're working this job by doing something for your writing career. Schedule writing time into your work calendar immediately - plan what you'll do in your breaks and some of your lunch hours for the next month.

And keep a notebook within reach so you can scribble down a rough character sketch when a colleague displays a new type of dysfunctional behavior. What else from your daily work environment could you use as manuscript fodder?

Overcoming Writer's Block 6 Simple Strategies

Writers block is that mental obstacle that prevents you from turning ideas into words. Sometimes the ideas are there, but getting them into a coherent form is problematic. Other times, you know what you want to say but are having trouble getting it to make as much sense on paper as it does in your head.

This phenomenon affects every writer, whether youre a writer by trade, a student writing a paper, or a casual writer jotting down ideas. Writers block can be supremely frustrating, especially if you are working on deadline and need to finish. After about 10 years of writing, Ive come up with six strategies for overcoming this obstacle and getting you back to your writing.

1. Do something mindless. When I come up against writers block, I do something mindless like washing the dishes. Doing monotonous activity can give your mind a break and allow your mind to wander. Because writer's block can often be the result of trying to hard or worrying about getting it perfect the first time, giving yourself a mental break can be just the break you need.

2. Do something physical. I like to take a walk outside if the weather is nice, and if its not, I try climbing the stairs at a leisurely pace. Physical activity is not only good for the body but can help increase oxygen flow to the brain, which aids in clear thinking.

3. Engage in conversation. Talking to a friend about whatever Im working on helps me to verbalize what I want to write about and often leads to some great breakthroughs. Sharing your ideas with someone not only allows you to think out loud but also can provide you with new ideas. If Im really stumped, I try talking to a fellow writer; this strategy usually provides me with a different take on an idea, which helps get my creative juices flowing.

4. Brainstorm. When I'm stuck on an idea, I use mind mapping or diagramming to help me get my thoughts in order. To draw a mind map, simply get a pencil and a sheet of paper and draw a large circle in the middle of the page. Write your topic in that circle and then draw lines connecting smaller circles to the central circle. In those smaller circles, write related topics or ideas. Seeing how all the seemingly random ideas are related can help you find a theme and focus your ideas.

5. Take a nap. When you're truly stuck and words just aren't there, take a break and sleep. Sometimes a refreshing cat nap can help you focus, and often ideas will come on their own after a bit of shut-eye.

6. Just start writing. The best strategy Ive found to overcome writers block is to just start writing. It sounds difficult, especially when youre finding writing in itself to be difficult, but it really works. When Im stuck, I get out my laptop and just start tapping away at the keys. I type out the topic. Then I type a question that may or may not relate to the topic. Then I find myself breaking through the obstacle by the sheer act of writing.

The next time youre stumped, try some of these strategies. Writing isnt always easy, but overcoming writers block need not block your way to success.

To Write or Not To Write - Is There a Writer in You?

So you want to become a writer. There are, of course, the physical and mental requirements. Education, hard work, that sort of thing. These are a must, and no writer worth his salt would call himself a writer without these. But theres more to it.

Do you have what it takes? How do you know if this is what you really want to invest the rest of your life in. These are the emotional questions that must be answered before you may put pen to paper. Beyond all the Diploma's and statements of your writing ability, it all comes down to the heart of writing. And heart is an apt term in this situation. Because sooner or later, there will come a time when the new wears off . You may have been published several times and became famous, but when that time comes , the writer within will shine his brightest. When writing becomes old hat, the true writer will forge onward, rushing to new heights, while the untrue writers will wander off on some wayside trail in search of different rainbows. With this in mind, you have to decide if you have the heart to make writing a career.

Let me give you an example. There was a time that I put writing on the back burner. I felt that I would never become a writer because I couldn't seem to finish anything, and frankly, life just got in the way. I had too many other pans in the fire, so I decided to put my writing career to the side and go on with my life, maybe to stumble across something else that I might like to do in the near future. Now this was the clincher for me. This was the moment in time that I realized that I was a true writer. For weeks, I was miserable. I couldn't sleep properly. I constantly caught myself wallowing in self-pity. It was as if I had lost a best friend.

Finally, I saw what was happening. Writing was as integral part of me as my arms. I began writing again, and another day dawned.

Writing is a friend when your lonely, or it can be a ravenous beast clawing at your mind, demanding release. Being published is a rush like no other, but for a true writer, being published is a grand side effect, a bonus, if you will. A true writer must feed this beast that hides within him, lest he be consumed by it. A bit melodramatic, but you get the point.

There are two things that you must have to become a writer. Lots of determination, and twice as much patience. You have to make yourself sit down at that computer, typewriter, or paper. Write as often and as much as you can. It is entirely too easy to say that you will do it after this is done or you've finished watching this T.V. show. This is not acceptable. Pick your times to write, and regardless of what else is going on, stick to it.

Patience is the tough part. Waiting for that idea. Waiting for this article or that book to be finished. Waiting to hear from a publisher. Writing is 50% patience, and 50% everything else.

This life-choice is hard work that can be emotionally as well as mentally stressful. Nevertheless, for those of you that have writers in you, just let me say this; as low as you feel when you get the first rejection slip, you will soar when you first see your name in print. You will become complete, and I warn you, being published is often an addictive sensation. Once you get there the first time, you will always strive to return.

Using Active Imagination to Access Psychic Knowledge

Active Imagination is a process related to automatic writing that is used by Jungian psychologists. Although automatic writing is done while in a trance, active imagination writing is done while conscious and aware. It is a gestalt type of dialog, where the writer poses a question of some other being, part of the psyche, the past or future self, or even fictional characters. Then the other answers through the subconscious to the imagination.

As the mental dialog takes place, the writer records both sides, skipping a line for each change of speaker or marking the alternating paragraphs. Active imagination writing can be done with any writing tool. Computers are especially nice in that the writer can change the font to italic or bold for one of the speakers with a keystroke (CTRL+ i for italics, CTRL + b for bold.) and the results are legible, if the typing is accurate. Pen and paper, however, may allow for more flow of energy directly from unconscious to paper, particularly for people who do not touch type quickly.

First an appropriate time should be chosen when one has at least half an hour with no interruptions, and no TV or telephone. Take the phone off the hook. Soft music that does not have lyrics, jazz, classical or new age music (not instrumental versions of pop songs) can be played if there is distracting background noise or if the silence is uncomfortable. Songs with lyrics distract from the focus on listening to the inner dialog.

Then the writer grounds and centers, clearing the mind of mundane concerns other than the issue at hand. The issue is written at the top of the paper, and it is a good idea to write the date as well for future reference. The writer writes an invitation to the other to come and dialog about the topic, then sits in silence, waiting for the other to speak up.

As a fiction writer, I have used this process to dialog with my characters, to see what the story looks like from their perspective, especially if I was stuck writing a scene. The "voice" I "hear" as the character speaks in my imagination is much different from my own mental voice. What the characters have to say sometimes surprises me very much, and they are sometimes angry that I have written the plot in a certain way. This is what authors mean when they say that their imaginary characters go off in their own directions.

I have also worked with goddess energy, specifically with the Sumerian goddess of the Underworld, Ereshkigal. She was adamant in her advice to me, and I have taken it to heart. Goddesses of death do not suffer fools, but they are also the keepers of the wealth that comes from the earth: food, metals, gemstones. It is is well to listen.

Other people have used this technique to dialog with elements of dreams to understand the meanings and implications. Fritz Perls' Gestalt Therapy used the dialog with dreams technique by having the dreamer speak aloud to an empty chair first as the dreamer, and then as the dream element, be it a person, animal or object. Active Imagination is much less strenuous, but also effective.

Addressing one's past self at an earlier age can help clarify the issues from that time, as the now self can reassure the past self. The same is true of dialog with the future self. If one addresses the self one wishes to become, that self can advise what changes are needed now to make that future happen. Just getting the future self's description of life can make it much easier to visualize and manifest.

Spirit writing, or addressing a person now dead, or even one not yet born, is also possible. The key to successful active imagination is to clear the mind and listen, to record the thoughts that arise. A session should probably not last more than half an hour. If the invitation to dialog is not followed by an answer within five minutes, it is best to start again later on. For most people, if they are not open to the answers within five minutes, more work is probably needed for centering.

As in any conversation with a relative stranger, be respectful and polite. Treat this activity as a relationship, and it will work like a relationship. If you are rude or demanding, the other may treat you without respect or refuse to dialog with you.

Some would argue that you are just talking to yourself, that you are making it all up. My answer is that we are all connected, not just those of us alive at the moment, but all those who have ever lived, and who ever will live, both on this plane of existence and elsewhere. Being willing to listen to another's perspective, opening a channel to someone not present is a form of psychic knowing, of being aware of the energies beyond the physical.

One of the problems of writing articles is that of coming up with the topics to write about. You may be thinking, there are only so many topics to write about, so I'll never get a few hundred articles out there. I have submitted over 3,700 articles on one topic so I know it can be done, it just requires some thinking outside of the box.

The first thing you would need to do is to do your keyword research. Make a list of the popular, high trafficked keywords in your niche market. And put them into a text document or a Word document. I have a list of about 30 keywords in a document that I open up whenever I want to write articles on that niche market. So this step makes your article writing a lot easier as you don't have to brainstorm new topics every time you write.

What happens when you write articles that are similar to your previous articles? Well, it's still valuable. As long as they are not entirely the same, and you don't copy your old articles but start each new article from afresh, and you include new ideas, that new article has value. It will reach more people and more people will be able to get your information.

There are tons of articles that similar in content on the web, but not everyone is going to find all of them. So for each of your keywords, you will need to write multiple unique articles, each with their own twist, so you will be able to gain greater market reach on the web. CONTROVERSY: Unlike other article writing reasons, when you write to achieve market "thought leadership" status, you must stir up the market by taking some gray issues and make them black and white. This is a good opportunity to take current events and provide your expert analysis and support reasons why certain issues are good or bad for the market, economy, world, etc.

CONSISTENCY: Using article marketing or putting your hundreds of articles into distribution is not a one-shot Charlie routine, but rather it's a drum you begin beating and every week for a few years you pound your article submission drums louder and louder.

It pays to create a burst of submissions (50-250) when you initially start, and then taper off to 10-100 new submissions per month until you reach a market saturation point that you feel puts your voice, your brand, your articles at the front of the pack.

PROMOTION: Once you put your articles into distribution via the various article directories, ezine publishers, and specialty web directories of your niche - the next step is to promote them further by using them to establish credibility as you participate in forums, blog comments, your own blog/online journal, and your email newsletter.

Experts Disagree on Definition of Writer's Block

Most writers do not have a definition for writers block and yet they seem to know it when they feel it. Even worse off is most experts disagree on the definition of writer's block. Currently I have written 8642 articles and place them online making me the all-time most prolific writer of online articles.

Another well-respected writer Mr. Steven Barnes, who has among other things published over three million words of fiction, been nominated for Hugo and Nebula Awards, and wrote the Emmy-winning "A Stitch In Time" episode of the Outer Limits, not to mention having been the creator of the Lifewriting high performance system for writers believes that writer's block definition should be this;

Writer's block is the inability to:

1) Produce new text.

2) Edit and polish existing text

3) Finish projects on a reasonable schedule

4) Send those projects out for editorial judgment.

5) Continue sending them out until they are sold or published.

Where as Mr. Steven Barnes has been writing for a very long time and may be correct about that, I beg to differ with his views and believe that writer's block should not be defined and each and every writer should deny its existence. I can tell you this having written between 5,800 and 16,800 words per day for the last 20 months straight that if I believed in writer's block and accepted that as a problem then there is no way I could have written this much.

I assume that great writers like Mr. Steven Barnes would not be able to write as much either if they suffer from what many writers call writer's block. There is no doubt that Mr. Steven Barnes is a great writer and there is no doubt that he does not suffer from anything called writers block.

My definition of writer's block is this; A pure fantasy inside a writer's head; which prevents them from writing because they think there's something wrong. I think I'm going to go with my definition rather than Mr. Steven Barnes because I cannot afford to accept writers block or anything which might slow down my writing. I would encourage all new writers to also take the same tact as me and deny the existence of writer's block. Please consider this in 2006.

Using Active Imagination to Access Psychic Knowledge

Active Imagination is a process related to automatic writing that is used by Jungian psychologists. Although automatic writing is done while in a trance, active imagination writing is done while conscious and aware. It is a gestalt type of dialog, where the writer poses a question of some other being, part of the psyche, the past or future self, or even fictional characters. Then the other answers through the subconscious to the imagination.

As the mental dialog takes place, the writer records both sides, skipping a line for each change of speaker or marking the alternating paragraphs. Active imagination writing can be done with any writing tool. Computers are especially nice in that the writer can change the font to italic or bold for one of the speakers with a keystroke (CTRL+ i for italics, CTRL + b for bold.) and the results are legible, if the typing is accurate. Pen and paper, however, may allow for more flow of energy directly from unconscious to paper, particularly for people who do not touch type quickly.

First an appropriate time should be chosen when one has at least half an hour with no interruptions, and no TV or telephone. Take the phone off the hook. Soft music that does not have lyrics, jazz, classical or new age music (not instrumental versions of pop songs) can be played if there is distracting background noise or if the silence is uncomfortable. Songs with lyrics distract from the focus on listening to the inner dialog.

Then the writer grounds and centers, clearing the mind of mundane concerns other than the issue at hand. The issue is written at the top of the paper, and it is a good idea to write the date as well for future reference. The writer writes an invitation to the other to come and dialog about the topic, then sits in silence, waiting for the other to speak up.

As a fiction writer, I have used this process to dialog with my characters, to see what the story looks like from their perspective, especially if I was stuck writing a scene. The "voice" I "hear" as the character speaks in my imagination is much different from my own mental voice. What the characters have to say sometimes surprises me very much, and they are sometimes angry that I have written the plot in a certain way. This is what authors mean when they say that their imaginary characters go off in their own directions.

I have also worked with goddess energy, specifically with the Sumerian goddess of the Underworld, Ereshkigal. She was adamant in her advice to me, and I have taken it to heart. Goddesses of death do not suffer fools, but they are also the keepers of the wealth that comes from the earth: food, metals, gemstones. It is is well to listen.

Other people have used this technique to dialog with elements of dreams to understand the meanings and implications. Fritz Perls' Gestalt Therapy used the dialog with dreams technique by having the dreamer speak aloud to an empty chair first as the dreamer, and then as the dream element, be it a person, animal or object. Active Imagination is much less strenuous, but also effective.

Addressing one's past self at an earlier age can help clarify the issues from that time, as the now self can reassure the past self. The same is true of dialog with the future self. If one addresses the self one wishes to become, that self can advise what changes are needed now to make that future happen. Just getting the future self's description of life can make it much easier to visualize and manifest.

Spirit writing, or addressing a person now dead, or even one not yet born, is also possible. The key to successful active imagination is to clear the mind and listen, to record the thoughts that arise. A session should probably not last more than half an hour. If the invitation to dialog is not followed by an answer within five minutes, it is best to start again later on. For most people, if they are not open to the answers within five minutes, more work is probably needed for centering.

As in any conversation with a relative stranger, be respectful and polite. Treat this activity as a relationship, and it will work like a relationship. If you are rude or demanding, the other may treat you without respect or refuse to dialog with you.

Some would argue that you are just talking to yourself, that you are making it all up. My answer is that we are all connected, not just those of us alive at the moment, but all those who have ever lived, and who ever will live, both on this plane of existence and elsewhere. Being willing to listen to another's perspective, opening a channel to someone not present is a form of psychic knowing, of being aware of the energies beyond the physical.

Ezine Publishers Want These 5 Things From Article Authors/Writers

Want your articles to get picked up and reprinted by top name brand ezine publishers?

While there is no shortage of authors willing to give their articles away for free with hopes of attracting ezine publishers who will pick up your article to send to their list as supplemental content or 'guest expert' - there is a gap between two very different types of articles:

Type 1: Those That Get Reprinted

Type 2: Those That Get Passed Over

Article marketing can help you achieve fame, traffic, credibility, sales, referrals and much more, but not if your articles don't make it into viral distribution.

Here are the top 5 factors that ezine publishers look for when they decide which articles to publish:

1) Does the article have zero self serving links in the article body? If so, good.

Loading up the body of your article with affiliate links or other obvious self-serving links is a liability. Your short-term thinking or scarcity based thinking (that you need to get an immediate return from your article) will keep your article from ever seeing top results.

2) Does the article have no more than 2 self serving links in the resource box? If so, good.

Your resource box at the bottom of your article should be short, sweet, succinct, to the point, and be less than 10% of the total word count of your article. Ezine publishers don't mind giving you name credit and a link for sharing your article with them, but they don't want to look like a fool by being required to reprint a short novel about all of your websites and accomplishments.

3) Is the article short (250-700 words)? If so, great.

We live in a 'sound byte' economy. No one has time to really go deep when it comes to reading email newsletters. It's proven that the shorter articles achieve a much higher distribution than the longer ones.

4) Does it deliver quality original content with numbered lists, bullet points or easy to glean information that their audience would find valuable? If so, good.

Key point: Make sure your articles are 100% original content. Anything less is really an insult.

5) Is the author well recognized or respected within their market niche. If so, excellent!

Ezine publishers have an ego just like you do. They want to use articles in their email newsletters that make them look good. The more you use your articles to help yourself gain credibility for your unique expertise within your niche, the greater the chances you'll find your articles getting picked up by your ezine publishing peers.

Hint: You'll need to write at least 100 or more articles before a top dog takes your credibility seriously. The greater majority of authors think they can put 1-6 articles into distribution and that's all that they will need to make it big. How erroneous their thinking is... You can quickly separate yourself by putting 100 more articles into distribution before this quarter is over. Yes, it is possible; Yes, it has been done; and Yes, you can do it.

There are many other considerations that ezine publishers look for, such as:

  • Relevancy of the article to the ezine publisher's core focus

  • Timing of the article and its relevance to current market dynamics

    One of the problems of writing articles is that of coming up with the topics to write about. You may be thinking, there are only so many topics to write about, so I'll never get a few hundred articles out there.     A "Thought Leader" is someone recognized as an authority in their field of expertise...also known as a visionary. Few people set out to become a "thought leader" or "guru," but there is good reason to not only establish yourself as an expert, but as a higher-level expert or "thought leader" for your market.

    How can you become a "thought leader" for your niche or industry?

    Besides risk-taking, leading a company that leads an industry, being vocal in your own blog and posting comments on other blogs & top industry forums within your niche... the easy answer to saturate the market is via the use of syndicated articles!

    CONTROVERSY: Unlike other article writing reasons, when you write to achieve market "thought leadership" status, you must stir up the market by taking some gray issues and make them black and white. This is a good opportunity to take current events and provide your expert analysis and support reasons why certain issues are good or bad for the market, economy, world, etc.

    CONSISTENCY: Using article marketing or putting your hundreds of articles into distribution is not a one-shot Charlie routine, but rather it's a drum you begin beating and every week for a few years you pound your article submission drums louder and louder.

    It pays to create a burst of submissions (50-250) when you initially start, and then taper off to 10-100 new submissions per month until you reach a market saturation point that you feel puts your voice, your brand, your articles at the front of the pack.

    PROMOTION: Once you put your articles into distribution via the various article directories, ezine publishers, and specialty web directories of your niche - the next step is to promote them further by using them to establish credibility as you participate in forums, blog comments, your own blog/online journal, and your email newsletter.
